Pavers, travertine & flagstone

Pavers, travertine, and walkways

Pavers sink, heave, and separate for a reason: a shifting base, poor drainage, or roots pushing up from below. Before we relay anything, we look at the affected area, the base, drainage, and settlement, so the repair addresses the cause as well as the surface.

Signs

What you might be seeing

  • Pavers that have sunk, tipped, or heaved
  • Missing pavers, or a patio that needs to be extended or built new
  • Joints opening up, or pavers drifting apart
  • Water standing on a patio or walkway after rain
  • Pavers lifted by roots, or left damaged after a tree removal
  • Broken or missing pavers or brick

Assessment first

What we check before we quote

  • The size and shape of the affected area
  • The base underneath, and whether it needs to be rebuilt
  • Drainage, and where water goes after a rain
  • Settlement nearby, and roots or voids under the surface

Photos help us give you a better first answer, but the cause isn’t always visible in a photo. When it matters, we look in person before quoting.

The work

What the work can include

  1. Sinking pavers, releveled

We lift the affected pavers, rebuild and compact the base, correct the drainage that caused it, and relay them.

  2. Missing or broken pavers, replaced

Broken and missing pavers are replaced with the closest available match, set in the same pattern.

  3. Repairs after tree or root removal

Once a trunk or roots are removed, the area is rebuilt and the pavers relaid.

  4. New installs: patios, porches, and walkways

New brick and stone paver installs on a compacted base, including herringbone porches and patios, brick borders, entry landings, driveways, and pool decks.

  5. Steps, stone, and custom masonry

Brick steps, natural stone and stone veneer, flagstone, outdoor kitchen bases, and brick mailboxes.

Questions

Frequently asked

Why are my pavers sinking?

Usually the base underneath has settled or washed out, often where water collects or roots have grown under the surface. Relaying pavers without fixing the base usually means they sink again, so we look at the base and drainage first.

Can you match my existing pavers?

As closely as the available supply allows. Colors vary by batch and fade over time, so we show you the closest option before we start.

Do you install new patios and walkways?

Yes. Brick and stone patios, porches, walkways, and entry landings, including herringbone patterns and brick borders.

Do I need a whole new base?

Not always. It depends on what we find under the affected area. The estimate spells out what we rebuild and why.
