Tuckpointing
Tuckpointing and repointing
Mortar is meant to wear out before the brick does. When the joints go soft, sandy, or hollow, water gets into the wall and the brick starts to loosen.
We grind out the failed mortar and repoint the joints with mortar custom-matched to your home, in color and in how the joint is tooled, so the repair blends in.

What we fix
Mortar crumbling, sandy, or missing?
Crumbling or sandy mortar
Joints you can scratch out with a key, or sand piling up at the base of the wall. We grind them out and repoint.

Missing mortar and open joints
Gaps where mortar has fallen out let water straight into the wall. We fill them properly, not with a smear on the surface.

The work
How we do it
-
Match the mortar
We mix sample batches and compare them to your cured mortar before we touch the wall.
-
Grind out
Failed mortar is ground out to a consistent depth without chipping the brick edges.
-
Repoint
New mortar is packed into the joints in layers and tooled to match the existing joint profile.
-
Clean up
We brush and clean the wall so mortar smears don’t stay on the brick.
Questions
Frequently asked
What is the difference between tuckpointing and repointing?
People use both words for the same job: removing worn mortar and replacing it. Strictly, tuckpointing adds a thin contrasting line on top of the new joint, but most homes in Houston just need repointing.
Will the new mortar match?
We custom-match the mortar for each home. New mortar can look slightly different while it cures, then settles in.
Do I need to repoint the whole house?
Usually not. We repoint the areas that have failed and tell you which areas are fine.
